Urban Gardens

This garden was featured at the San Mateo Eichler Tour in May 2014. Before it was designed it consisted of a dead lawn and terracotta cobbles. The client and I collaborated to add a hot tub, rock garden and concrete benches tiled with Heath ceramic tiles.  Eric Enns designed and built the art shed.

This garden was featured at the San Mateo Eichler Tour in May 2014. The deck that surrounds the hot tub leads to a rock garden and is partially filtered by plantings in a raised IPE planter. The low water use plants are great for this full sun garden. We placed the clients collection of mid century Gainey planters on the patio to bring color to the gray newly poured concrete.

This garden was previously a dirt hill. Growsgreen designed it to be functional with veggie gardens, firepit, BBQ and dining/seating areas.

By using hardscaping, I was able to create many places to be in the garden turning it into a very useful space complete with built in IPE and concrete benches, outdoor dining area, Built in BBQ, and concrete fountain. We completed the look with a fire pit and heated furniture a la Galanter & Jones.

This garden was formerly dirt and a slope. We removed dirt to create a flat area for entertaining and to include a fire pit. The concrete was poured in different grays to add some interest to the small patio without getting too busy. The grasses and succulents form a beautiful hedge for an urban respite.

This garden was previously overgrown with planting beds and a single central path leading nowhere. It now has areas for the homeowner to entertain, lounge and relax.
 

This garden was overrun with plants with no place to go but a path that lead to nowhere. It was redesigned to have a few different places to gather and entertain, the deck, a lawn and a larger patio that houses a dining area and lounge seating. The IPE fence and deck creates a nice bit of warmth against the brick and simple plantings.

This IPE deck and garden are so warmly lit by cafe lights and wall lights within the deck step and benches.

This garden was revamped by taking out the water hogging lawn and replacing with an IPE deck, dymondia and concrete and gravel areas. The drought tolerant grasses and shrubs create a silver and green backdrop for the hardscaping.

This garden was a large lawn that was never used. I redesigned it to create several seating areas including a deck, a heated fire pit area and a fountain.

The garden is planted with drought tolerant grasses, olive trees and New Zealand natives.

This garden uses containers and plants that can handle wind and less water. The result is a textural organic combination of plants to provide a beautiful roof top display and respite.

This garden was a collaborative design process with the client and Palm whisperer Jason Dewees. As well as the amazing Galanter and Jones for their heated bench. The palms and plants have been in the works by Jason and Jared for over 17 years. They asked me to help design the hardscape around the existing plants. Challenging!

Great use of an upper deck space, we created a serene patio in the shade for those hot summer days in San Anselmo. The deck provided a nice space for adding a hammock and vintage light fixture.

Succulents and Anemones make up a low water planting in this naturally clay garden. The Texas Cream stone wall creates a pathway for the visitor and offsets the green in the plants.

This drought tolerant lawn is also supplemented by fruitless olives and Miscanthus. Once the lawn is established it can get as little water as needed to go dormant in drought months or just enough water to keep it green. It can be mowed as little as 4 times a year.
